Sculpted Larval Forms
This is a very unique display and in many ways unlike any other. Sculpted larval forms such as these are rarely attempted. This is due to the complexity of accurately reproducing tiny living objects at a size that can easily be seen while maintaining an accurate appearance. Some of these stages were not known to have ever been sculpted in three dimensions and posed many unique challenges. The thousands of individual cilia on these forms were all attached one at a time and all were hand painted. The fleshy parts of these sculptures are created with a material that exhibits a subtle transparency.
Not shown in this photo are sculptures of the adult stages of the two life cycles.
